Busy, busy, busy

3 09 2010

I can’t tell you all how much I have enjoyed the last few weeks.  I have walked 24 of the 30+ villages that make up Dublin City…and I’m not done yet!   This week, I started walking the City Centre area.  I’ve met so many business owners who are excited about working with the City Council and my office on renewing their commitment to the community.

On Tuesday, 31st of August, I held my first Village Workshop.  Business owners, community leaders, councillors and members of the DCC staff came together to brainstorm about how we can better market our small businesses and the villages they call home.  The enthusiasm was terrific, and the buzz that was generated motivated everyone who was there.  In fact, Pauline Sargent, Drimnagh Community Network secretary, went out right after the workshop and walked her village. She met more than 17 business owners and several of them are meeting with John Phelan to talk about getting the village businesses online.  That is the “real time”, “champion” spirit we were talking about at the workshop.

The plan is to keep that buzz going.  My staff has already set the wheels in motion with FÁS to see how we can team up marketing and business graduates with our villages to help each village coordinate their marketing and community efforts.  We are also in the process of working out an organisational template that villages can follow and make their own.

If you would like to get involved with your village, contact the Mansion House, and we’ll connect you with someone in your area.

Back on the street this afternoon.  I’m joining Pauline in Drimnagh to follow up on the hard work she’s already done!

Inchicore, Rialto, Chapelizod, Ballyfermot, Glasnevin, Phibsborough and Cabra

21 08 2010

Along with my usually busy schedule, I have been doing Village Walks all over the city of Dublin.  The Walks have generated some great discussions, a lot of ideas and several insights about the wonderful villages that make up our city.   Wednesday,  Catherine Byrne T.D. and Councillor Clare Byrne joined me in Inchicore, and then I headed off to Rialto, Chapelizod and Ballyfermot.   Friday’s schedule included Glasnevin, Phibsborough and Cabra.  I was joined in those villages by Councillors Ray McAdam and Mary Fitzpatrick.

*Many thanks to all of the folks we met along the way, and to Martin McChree for taking all of the wonderful photos.

Welcome…

1 06 2010

Dear Dubliner,

It is a great honour for me to be your Lord Mayor.

My term of office started on Monday June 28th, 2010 and lasts for 12 months.

This website is an effort to let you know what is happening in my role as Lord Mayor and also allow you email me with queries, questions, suggestions or complaints.

Each year the Lord Mayor presents “Lord Mayor Awards” to people who have made an outstanding contribution to their community in Dublin or elsewhere.

This year you have a chance to nominate someone you would like to see presented with the Lord Mayor’s Awards. Please see the tab above named “Lord Mayor’s Award” for further details.

In an effort to secure more jobs for Dublin City, I am trying to promote the use of new technology in Dublin City Council and around Dublin City. Towards this, I am publishing a Google Map Guide to Free WiFi Dublin on this website (see the tab bar above) This will soon be available as an application for iPhones.

My three priorities for the my year as Lord Mayor are “jobs, jobs, jobs” and if I can help protect, maintain or create jobs in Dublin please let me know and I will do my best to help.

Regards,

Gerry
